Surface functions

In general, the coating system is based on a two-component principle: in order to anchor the surface functionality on a single substrate permanently, a bonding agent is required. Thanks to innovations in adhesion, any function can be imparted to any number of substrate surfaces.

 

Adhesion promotion

Whether it's a case of plastic, metal, glass or ceramics, where other adhesives fail, SuSoS' solutions will significantly improve adhesion, with no unnecessary plasma or corona pretreatment. You can choose between two types of molecularly thin coatings that differ in their application process and in their composition: adhesion promoter and hydrophilic primer solution (HPS).

With the adhesion promoter, a strong, direct chemical bond between the substrate and the functional layer (polymer, paint, glue or adhesive) can be achieved. With HPS,  the substrate is treated with a layer that contains various molecules (including the adhesion promoter). In this way, the chemical affinity of the substrate to the functional layer is permanently improved.

The application steps for the adhesion promoter are as follows:

  1. Coating the substrate with the adhesion promoter
  2. Immediate application of the subsequent layer (eg glue or paint)
  3. Activation by UV-C light or heat

In contrast, the application steps for HPS are as follows:

  1. Coating of the substrate with HPS
  2. Activation by UV light or heat
  3. Application of the subsequent layer, which can be done later

Which of the two processes will be of interest to you depends on the second layer that is to be applied. UV transparency and heat resistance are further criteria that will influence your choice.

 

Anti-adhesion

While many people wish to increase adhesion, others dream of non-adhesive surface properties, thinking of Teflon®, for example. SuSoS' anti-adhesive coating resembles Teflon® and prevents the adhesion of diverse materials on a variety of surfaces.

Anti-fog

The issue of condensation (“fogging”) is often underestimated. For many people, fogging is simply an inconvenience, but it can actually be fatal, especially in traffic. Technically speaking, the fogging of surfaces is a process in which water vapor condenses on a cool surface and, because of high surface tension, forms droplets. SuSoS' anti-fog coating increases the surface tension, causing a flattening of the water droplets, which then form a thin, transparent film. Anti-fog coatings can be used in a range of applications-from bathroom mirrors to automotive tail lights-bringing added value to the final consumer.

Bacterial resistance

Every day we are surrounded by germs, bacteria, algae, and molds. We are often unaware of these, and on the whole they are not dangerous. Nevertheless, certain germs can cause major problems. If they can stick easily to a surface, it only takes a few germs to form a thick biofilm in a very short time. The accumulation of such germs in turn increases the chances that the harmful pathogens will reproduce, both endangering the environment and causing potentially serious health issues.

Our anti-bacterial coatings reduce the adhesion of the bacteria and other micro-organisms on surfaces. By a simple rinsing process, the microbes can be detached from the surface, thus preventing their propagation. SuSoS has come up with the perfect solution: a non-fouling coating. Whatever the micro-organism, it will simply be unable to adhere to the product’s surface, and will therefore be incapable of reproducing.

With our non-fouling coating, we offer an excellent foundation for preventing pathogens and infections from developing.

Dirt repellent

Like it or not, cleaning is something we do every day! But we often only do it because it is necessary: hardly anyone actually enjoys it. In industry, a lot of time is also invested in the cleaning of machinery and tools. Valuable time, however, can be saved thanks to self-cleaning coatings.

Our Easy-to-Clean coating impedes the adhesion of dirt or other environmental contaminants on surfaces, hugely facilitating the cleaning process. At the same time, the frequency of cleaning processes in a given period is reduced. The tiniest amount of residual contamination can be easily removed by simply rinsing the surface.

The advantages of a dirt-repellent surface solution are clear: in addition to the time saved, the use of environmentally harmful cleaning agents can be minimized or completely eliminated.

Corrosion protection

In general, corrosion is the reaction of a material with its environment. Our corrosion-inhibiting solution prevents this reaction by forming a hydrophobic protective film on the surface.
